This is a rare warning for South Carolina from the Shore Beach Service, but an unprecedented number of these colorful creatures known as Portuguese Men o’ War are washing up on our beaches this year. So if you're headed to the beach for the holidays, watch your step and DON'T TOUCH! Their sting is very painful, and they can sting even after weeks of being on shore. If you do get stung, soak the area in hot water and seek medical attention.
The Portuguese Men o’ War are close relatives of the jellyfish, and they get their name because they look like an 18th century Portuguese warship with its sails unfurled.
