I have often heard that old saying about old dogs not being able to learn new tricks, but here's a story that negates that completely! This is a story that I find so inspiring!
Joyce DeFauw started college in 1951 with the plan to get a degree in Home Economics. She attended for three and a half years, but she fell in love and decided to drop out of college to get married in 1955. Joyce had a good life. She had six children, including two sets of twins, and now has 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Then, in 2019, she made it known that she was unhappy about never finishing college, and her children encouraged her to go back. So she did! She re-enrolled at Northern Illinois University and began to take classes online via her very first computer. As you can imagine, it was a frustrating process at times, but with everyone's encouragement, she persevered. And she has succeeded, for she is finally graduating this very weekend with a Bachelor's in General Studies!
Her advice?
“Don’t give up,” she said, “I know it can be difficult, but everything in life has its ups and downs.”
