Growing up is basically one long audition to figure out who we are, which means many of us spent our childhoods doing some truly spectacularly weird things. From adopting alter-egos to wearing the same weird clothes every day to convincing our classmates we had magical powers, kids will try anything to feel unique. And thanks to the Internet, these memories live forever and they’re just as cringe (and hilarious) as we remember.
BuzzFeed asked people to confess the “embarrassing phase” they went through as a teen and these are some of the top responses:
- "I started a rap crew based on Winnie the Pooh. I was Pooh Daddy, my friend was the Notorious T.I.G., and another friend was Big O. We were writing a song called 'Honey Rhymes with Money.' The name of this group? Pooh Tang Clan."
- "I wore a cat collar to school with a bell on it because I thought it was cool."
- "I thought I was a werewolf in ninth grade, recruited dozens of students into a 'pack,' and even involved a counselor, who got fired for hosting 'magic rituals' with us."
- "I used to narrate everything around me aloud like a brooding emo poet, saying things like, 'Fire, slowly burning, destroying and turning everything black…' while making s'mores."
- "From first grade until my freshman year, I wore a hot dog shirt every day. I still have around 30–40 hot dog shirts."
- "I spoke in a British accent. I'm from the southern US."
- "I kept my teeth black all day with charcoal toothpaste and flashed smiles at people for reactions, until my dad started checking my teeth before I left the house."
- "I had business cards printed that said ‘Knight in Shining Armor’ and handed them to people I found attractive."
- "I tried to convince people I had a twin, and even had ‘her’ come to school one day."
- "I was obsessed with cows and wore cow leggings several times a week, used cow stationery for love notes, and stenciled cows in my room."
- "My friends and I had a “Twilight” phase so intense that we only spoke in quotes, assigned ourselves Cullen family identities, and pretended invisible characters were sitting with us."
- "I slicked my hair into a tight, gelled bun and only plucked one eyebrow into a dramatic arch."
- "I pretended to be a spy, walked fast while ‘scanning for danger,’ carried my dad’s briefcase, and wore black gloves even in summer."
- "I was obsessed with The Three Musketeers movie and convinced my mom to buy me a velour cloak that I wore everywhere for months."
- "I brought heels to school and changed into them midday because I thought it made me look mature."
