A key indicator that a recession is coming? Blondes. Hair stylists across the country are seeing signs that tough economic times might be coming. They're noticing clients stretching their appointments from every six to eight weeks to three or four months. Many people are skipping haircuts and just getting color, or avoiding the salon altogether. This has led to a trend called "recession blonde," where women let their natural roots grow out and blend them with lighter colors at the bottom. It saves money because they don't need touch-ups as often.
Some stylists compare this to what happened during COVID and the writers' strike when business dropped off. To help clients save money, stylists are offering deals like free haircuts with color services. They're also teaching people how to style their hair at home and suggesting low-maintenance cuts and colors that last longer between visits. Many stylists don't want clients to feel guilty about cutting back and are finding ways to support people through tough times while keeping their businesses running.
