Teen accused of using truck to rip GVL ATM from bank, stealing over $10K

A teen accused of wrapping a Greenville County bank's ATM in chains, hooking the chains to a stolen truck and ripping the machine from its base, has been arrested in Texas, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Gerrode Smith, 19, of Houston, was arrested Monday and faces charges for the crime, Lt. Ryan Flood said.

Smith remains in Texas, awaiting extradition, Flood said.

Smith is one of several suspects in the burglary that happened about 7 a.m. on July 15 at the PNC Bank, at 2000 Wade Hampton Blvd., Flood said.

Investigators said the burglars used a 2006 Ford F-250 that was stolen earlier that same morning from a location on East North Street.

Deputies first received a call from a passerby who reported finding the stolen truck that was used in the crime.
