Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than just a day off. It is the day in which we honor the contributions he made as a civil rights leader and his place in American history. It has also come to be a day of service nationwide in honor of his values. So here are some ways to meaningfully celebrate MLK Day this year on Monday, January 16th:
- Read some of King's books or read books about him to get a good understanding of the reasons behind this day.
- Look for ways to give back to the community. Look for opportunities to volunteer to help those in need. AmeriCorps can help you find local and national MLK Day volunteer opportunities.
- If you are artistic, use this day to inspire your art and take a stand against hate through music, painting, writing or whatever is your preferred method. If you have kids, get them involved in an art project, too!
- Look for and then support those organizations that fight racial injustice by donating or volunteering to help. Try to make activism a part of your life on an ongoing basis.
- Watch a movie about MLK, such as Our Friend, Martin or Ava Duvernay’s Selma to learn more about his life.
- Check out local events for MLK Day or take a virtual tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.
