It’s hard for most of us to imagine being 80 years old, but a couple in the U.K. are celebrating eight decades of wedded bliss. Jack and Joan Bare have been married for 80 years and they may now be Britain’s longest married couple. They haven’t spent a night apart since World War II, but they’re still not sick of each other. And Joan says this is probably the key to their long union.
“I don’t feel like it’s been a long time,” explains Joan, 100. “Sometimes I wonder where the time has gone.”
The couple met a month before WWII began and got married on August 3rd, 1939. Jack, 102, served in Italy during the war and their daughter, Gill, says her mom was so worried about him, she doesn’t “think they ever wanted to be apart after that.” The lovebirds celebrated their 80th anniversary in their nursing home in Codsall, England, where they would only agree to live if they could stay there together.
When asked about the secret to what Jack calls “a lovely, happy marriage,” Joan offers this advice: “Talk about things and don’t go to sleep angry.”
