Firefighters Paint Blind WWII Veteran's Home

World War II veteran William Velez may be blind, but he still recognizes the kindness of strangers. He got to experience it firsthand when the Hillsborough County Fire Department and a group of volunteers painted his home as part of the annual “Paint Your Heart Out Tampa” event in Florida.

Dozens of fire department staff participated in painting and perfecting the 89-year-old’s home, even the chief was there. The event is all about giving back to the community and in addition to making the house look better, fire cadets installed smoke detectors inside.

The volunteers were happy to help spruce things up and the vet and his wife are grateful for their efforts. “It makes me glad,” Velez says. “I’m very, very happy for that.”
