Everyone knows that when you go to a wedding the one thing you should never do is upstage the bride. Well, one bride claims that’s exactly what happened when one of her guests showed up in full military uniform, and how she handled it is up for debate.
The unidentified bride shared on Reddit’s “Am I The (Jerk)” forum that the son of one of her husband’s family friends attended their 300-person wedding in his “marines formal wear, complete with medals.” Since the wedding was black tie optional the bride felt it wasn’t appropriate, adding, “it seemed like he was trying to show off.”
She says he guest “of course was acting very well mannered and like a complete gentleman,” but she couldn’t help but notice the amount of attention he was getting. Some young girls asked for photos with him, and lots of people were thanking him for his service, and it just got to be too much for the bride. She notes, “it just felt like the only reason he wore that was to be in the spotlight and make it about him, which I don't think you are supposed to do at someone else's wedding.” She was so upset she asked him to leave because he was stealing her spotlight.
The bride claims she felt bad about the situation and asked users if she was in the right, and the responses were mixed. Several service men chimed in and claimed the guy was totally in the wrong for dressing in his uniform, although they don’t exactly think she was right for kicking him out.
- One former military man noted wearing the uniform is allowed, but added, " you (should not) wear it to a non-military wedding without specific permission of the couple." The Sargeant added, "He was rude. No question, but kicking him out of the wedding was a bit much.”
