WWII Vet Gets 50K Cards For 96th Birthday

World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient Duane Sherman has seen some amazing things in his lifetime, but sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most. So before he turned 96 last month, Duane’s daughter, Sue Morse, made a request on Facebook for people to send a birthday card to her dad.

Morse says her father gets excited about getting mail and that with so many of his friends gone, getting cards in the mail would help give him something to celebrate for his birthday. And folks were happy to help, thousands of birthday greetings rolled in for Duane.

By the time his birthday rolled around on December 30th, he had received more than 50,000 cards from all 50 states and 10 countries. Not a bad way to honor a veteran for his 96th trip around the sun. He seems pleased with the haul, saying, “Well, I’ll have a hell of a time reading them.”
