20 Dead In Birthday Party Limo Crash

What began as an afternoon of fun ended in horrific tragedy in upstate New York on Saturday as a two-car crash left 20 people dead. What we know for sure? That a limousine traveling through Schoharie blew a stop sign, went through an intersection and drilled into a parked car outside an Apple Barrel Country Store.

But it wasn’t just the passengers in the limo. Two pedestrians were also struck – and they are among the dead. The group was apparently taking a winery tour – and doing it the “safe way,” by hiring a limo. This crash serves the deadliest transportation-related accident in the US since February 2009 – that's when 49 people died in a plane crash near Buffalo, New York.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt says the hard work of figuring out what went wrong has only begun. "We cast a very broad net to see what's out there,” Sumwalt told reporters. “And then, in our analysis phase, is where we start winnowing it down.” Officials have not confirmed the names of those lost pending family notification.
