The woman who was convicted for her role in the kidnapping of Smart as a child, will be released from Utah State Prison next week. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole has scheduled the release of Wanda Barzee for September 19th. In his letter, Board Director Greg Johnson said the state must count the time Barzee spent in federal prison as credit towards her Utah sentence.
Smart, who is now 30, was stunned at the news. “It is incomprehensible how someone who has not cooperated with her mental-health evaluations or risk assessments and someone who did not show up to her own parole hearing can be released into our community.” The now child safety activist also notes she will not keep quiet and plans to make her voice heard loudly about this.
Barzee and Brian Mitchell were arrested in 2003 for kidnapping Elizabeth Smart. She pleaded guilty in federal court in 2009, and in Utah court in 2010. Mitchell is currently serving a life sentence.
