Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols Suffering From Dementia

Nichelle Nichols has been diagnosed with dementia. According to her conservatorship documents, the woman best known for playing Lieutenant Uhura on “Star Trek” has “moderate progressive dementia.”

Dr. Meena Makhijani, who practices osteopathic medicine and has been seeing Nichelle for the last few years, says the 85-year-old has major impairment in her short-term memory and moderate impairment when it comes to abstract concepts like time, place, and recall. However, her long-term memory, comprehension, verbal communication, concentration and recognition of familiar people is fine.

Nichelle’s rep hasn’t commented on the situation.
