Study: Women More Likely To Die If Doctor Is Male

posted by Charlie Munson -

Women are more likely to die of a heart attack if their doctor is a man. A study out this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that women were 12 percent more likely to succumb to a fatal heart attack if they were treated by a man. On the other side of the coin, people treated by women doctors had a better chance of survival regardless of their own gender. The study's authors can't really explain the gap, but figure men might be worse at communicating with women. They also theorize that women tend to have heart attacks at an older age than men, making their overall risk of a severe attack greater.
