Dolly Felt She “Arrived” After Whitney Covered “I Will Always Love You"

Dolly Parton sits down with Reese Witherspoon for the new “Shine On With Reese” interview series, and in a preview of the episode, Dolly talks about the first time she heard Whitney Houston sing her song “I Will Always Love You.”

“She took [the song] to so many levels,” Parton says. “To think that my little song — my little heartfelt, heartbreaking song — could be that big, I felt that I had arrived as a writer.”

Dolly says that after Kevin Costner asked if they could use the song for the movie, she had totally forgotten about it. Then she heard Whitney’s take on the radio. “I was driving home and all of a sudden I hear this sound on the radio,” she says, adding that she thought her “heart was gonna bust” when she heard the opening. Dolly shares, “I had to pull over lest I should wreck. It was the most overwhelming feeling I’ve ever had.”
