WWII Vet Surprised With Diploma 73 Years Later

A World War II veteran who put his education aside to serve his country has finally gotten the high school diploma he would’ve received decades ago. Vito Trause, a 92-year-old who withdrew from East Rutherford High School 75 years ago to join the army, has been awarded his diploma by the school’s class of 2018, thanks to an effort dubbed Operation Vito.

Trause connected with the students at his alma mater, which is now called Becton Regional High School, when he came to speak to seniors earlier this month. The vet joked that he didn’t have “much time left, so it’s good to graduate now.”
