Although he was forced to bail on a show in Charlotte this weekend due to illness, Willie Nelson is still performing regularly, and in a new interview with AARP, the 85-year-old year old opens up about what keeps him going.
“You’ve gotta want it,” Willie says. “And when you get it you got to still want it.” And Willie chalks his longevity up to his positive thinking, noting, “A negative thought will kill you. So if you’re even thinking negative you’ve got to change that first.”
Willie says in the early days of his career he was so “stubborn,” that it “wouldn’t do any good to tell me anything,” adding, “We all go through periods when we feel like we have to follow our gut and do what we feel is right at the time when everybody else might think it’s dumb.”
And really nothing much has changed now. “I don’t do what I don’t want to do, but if I want to do it, get out of the …. way because I’m going to do it!,” he says. “And I suggest everyone have an attitude similar.”
