Horror in Toronto as a man identified as 25-year-old Alek Minassian mowed down unsuspecting pedestrians yesterday in a rental van – killing 10 and injuring 15 more. And while police do agree that the incident was a planned attack, they also say it’s not part of a larger plot. At least that’s not where they are at this stage of the investigation.
"I've had the opportunity to consult with the senior officials of the security and police agencies of the Government of Canada,” Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale offered in a press conference. “And on the basis of all available information at the present time there would appear to be no national security connection to this particular incident.”
As for what Minassian’s motivations might be, that’s also an open question. As investigators continue to interview him, word is that the attack may have been more motivated by mental illness than terror group affiliation. At last check, his home was being searched overnight.
Considering the scene as he was taken into custody, it’s not such a leap either. In a video, Minassian challenged officers to kill him saying he had a gun in his pocket. The officer (who hasn’t been named) declined to shoot – and soon, took him into custody without incident.
