Remembering Two Stock Car Legends From The Carolinas

Edwin Keith "Banjo" Matthews was born on Valentine’s Day, 1932 in Hendersonville.  Banjo made 51 starts in the Monster Energy Cup series, winning three poles.  Later, he was a team owner for Fireball Roberts, A. J. Foyt, Junior Johnson, Donnie Allison, and Cale Yarborough. But he was best known for building cars.  From 1974 to 1985, 72% of winning Cup cars were built by Banjo Matthews.

Sam Ard was born on Valentine’s Day, 1939, in Pamplico, South Carolina.  Ard dominated what was then known as the Busch Series (now Xfinity) winning back-to-back titles in 1983 and 1984.  In 92 series races, Ard won 22 times finished in the top ten 79 times…an astonishing 86%!  His Monster Energy Cup career wasn’t quite as successful.  He had one start, at Martinsville, and his steering broke before the end of the first lap.
