In a world where bullying and other mental health issues often turn out to the be instigating factor behind a campus shooting, the one that took place at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles was different. According to police, the shooting was accidental.
As such, a 12-year-old girl, who has not been identified due to her age – has been arrested and charged with negligent discharge of a firearm. If there’s good news, it’s that the 15-year-old boy shot in the head is expected to survive – as is the 15-year-old girl hit in the wrist. Several others suffered minor injuries.
"One of the main missions we will have is the issue of finding out how a young person had access to a weapon," says Steven Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles school system police department. "I assure you, if it came from an adult in a home, that the proper prosecutorial procedure will occur."
