Russian Jet Intercepts US Jet
The U.S. Naval Forces Europe is confirming a Russian jet got about five-feet from a U.S Navy surveillance plane flying over the Black Sea.
"This interaction was determined to be unsafe," said Navy Capt. Pamela Kunze, adding that the U.S. aircraft was operating in accordance with international law and "did not provoke" the Russians. The State Department says the Russian side was "flagrantly violating existing agreements and international law."
The Navy aircraft aborted its mission early after taking a 15-degree roll and experiencing violent turbulence. The Russian Ministry of Defense denies their jet acted unsafely.
Yesterday's incident lasted two hours and 40 minutes, Kunze said. The Black Sea has been the frequent site of unsafe encounters between Russian and U.S. aircraft.
