NASCAR has penalized Chase Elliott's Hendrick Motorsports team for an aerodynamic infraction found after last Sunday’s Tales of the Turtles 400 Monster Energy Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
During post-race inspection following Elliott's second-place finish (to Martin Truex Jr.), a piece of tape was discovered to have been placed on the rear spoiler of the No. 24 Chevrolet.
Crew chief Alan Gustafson has been fined $25,000. He and car chief Joshua Kirk have been suspended for one race. The team also was docked 15 owner and driver points, and the one playoff bonus point Elliott earned for winning the second stage has been rescinded.
The points penalty drops Elliott from sixth to eighth in the standings. Hendrick Motorsports said it would not appeal the penalties.
Kenny Francis, who was removed as Kasey Kahne’s crew chief earlier this week in favor of Darian Grubb, will fill in for Gustafson this coming weekend in New Hampshire.
