Senate Approves Resolution Posthumously Honoring Pearl Harbor Hero

A sailor who saved six men from the sinking USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor is finally recognized by Uncle Sam. Arizona Senator Jeff Flake sponsored a resolution in the Senate honoring Boatswain's Mate Joe George, who was on a repair ship moored nearby when the Arizona took a direct hit from Japanese bombers. On the Senate floor, Flake said Joe George threw a line from his ship to the Arizona's control tower, which the six men were able to make their way across to safety. Joe George passed away in 1996. He was never recognized by the Navy because he defied orders to save the men. Flake's resolution was approved yesterday by unanimous consent.
