Pen Pals Meet After 71 Years

USA, New York State, New York City, Still life with pocket watch, old letter and photograph

Australia’s Lesley Exell first wrote to Betty Turner in England back in July 1946. The two girls became pen pals and have never stopped writing each other letters. And now after 71 years, they have finally had the chance to meet in person.

It took 50 years of letter writing before the women ever heard each other’s voices. And after talking on the phone for years, their sons connected them on Skype.

Excell flew to England to visit with the woman she has come to know so well, but had never seen face to face. She had never even been on a plane before this trip! And she says travelling was a “marvelous adventure.”
