Utah Department of Public Safety pilot Luke Bowman was called to help search for a kayaker who had become separated from his group, but he ended up rescuing a family instead. He was flying his helicopter along the Escalante River when he found a family of four who had been stranded for two days after crashing their kayaks.
Thankfully, the mom, dad, and two teenage daughters were fine and just a little sunburned after their days in the wild. They were able to save their tents, sleeping bags, and food before it floated down the rapids with their kayaks and paddles.
"The mom said something like, 'I don't care where we go, just get me out of this canyon.'” Bowman says. “They were pretty relieved for sure.”
And don’t worry about the kayaker Bowman was sent out to search for initially - he made his way back to camp and is safe and sound.
