There has been an alarming increase of lithium-ion battery fires and explosions due to the growing number of items that use these batteries, particularly electric bikes and scooters. All lithium-ion batteries use flammable materials that can undergo a chain reaction called a “thermal runaway” triggered by overheating, a puncture, or an electrical fault, which can result in a dangerous fire or catastrophic explosion. So what can you do to protect yourself?
- Buy items that use lithium-ion batteries from reputable retailers.
- If there is a fire, evacuate immediately and call 911. Do not try to handle the fire on your own, as these battery fires spread incredibly fast, and fire extinguishers are not effective.
- Follow proper charging and usage guidelines. These batteries should be charged and stored in a cool, dry place.
- These batteries should not be left charging for too long.
- Do not charge these batteries while you sleep.
- If a laptop or cellphone gets noticeably hot while charging, unplug it.
- Always use the charger that came with the device, or use one from a reputable supplier.
- Minimize battery exposure to extremes in temperature, especially when charging.
- Routinely inspect your batteries for cracking, bulging or leaking.
- Never leave electric devices where they block an exit.
