No more passwords?

Imagine how great it would be to not have to remember a bunch of passwords for all the apps and sites you use! The good news is that it could soon be a reality.

Apple and Google are hoping that passkeys will replace traditional passwords. A passkey makes it possible to log into websites by using biometric authentication (i.e. scanning your face or finger) via a trusted iPhone or Android device instead of using a password. When using a passkey, your device just sends a securely generated code to the website being accessed, which is easier since you don't have to remember a password and is more secure as nothing can be leaked.

Apple has already made passkeys part of iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. Google is adding passkeys to Chrome, whereby users just scan a QR code with their device to log in. Other companies have also announced that they will be supporting passkeys, including Microsoft, PayPall, eBay, and more.
